Garcia's 13 points help Panthers defeat Los Fresnos
WESLACO - Weslaco High (22-4, 5-1) is still
marching to get to their district championship goal and a
district 32-5A win over Los Fresnos gets them one step closer.
The Panthers opened the game with a 21-10 run in the first
quarter. But, Los Fresnos would have a great second quarter
going on a 17-8 run and stay in the game with a 29-27 Panther
lead.
Weslaco High's Raul Garcia, who scored 13 points on the night,
came out of the second half with a three-pointer from downtown
to give the Panthers' a 32-27 lead.
The Panthers would let Los Fresnos score 7 points in the third
quarter and from there on, it was all Weslaco in the fourth
quarter. Panthers' Julius Marquez accounted for 6 of the points
scored in the fourth to beat Los Fresnos, 54-42.
"There's a lot of things we can do a lot better," said Weslaco
High head coach Gabe Valdez. "Offensively we need to execute a
lot better. We executed well at first but we didn't continue to
(execute) and it kind of hurt us a little bit. We'll take the
win and will try to improve on the things we need to improve
on."
At this point, Valdez said he needs to find ways to stop the
team's from taking advantage of their defense.
"We need to continue to do the little things better," he said.
"Defensively we didn't do what we had to do to stop (Los Fresnos)
in the first half. We did a great job of coming back and
playing. We just didn't do the right things at the right time.
We could have done a lot of things a lot better (against Los
Fresnos) but we didn't. We'll take the win."
