BEEVILLE - The Lady Wildcats’ (2-0-1)
soccer team had to play in 30 degree temperatures in this past
weekend’s Beeville tournament.
For many of the players, the key to success
was trying to stay warm.
Weslaco East defeated
Kingsville
4-1 in the consolation championship game on Saturday afternoon.
In Friday’s tournament action, the Lady Wildcats fell short in a
shootout against Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway 2-1 in round 1,
but shutout Palacious 5-0 in round 2.
“We got better as the tournament went on,”
said Weslaco East head coach Adriel Martinez. “Weather was
factor (during the tournament). We started playing well as we
continued to play (and) we had (good) communication. We also had
real good execution on our passing. We dominated every single
game. Our defense did real good.”
Weslaco East’s Cassie Torrez and Claire
Torrez were named all-tournament. Claire Torrez had two goals in
the consolation championship game. Raelynn Villarreal and
Delicia Ballesa each had a goal in their victory over
Kingsville.
“We started (playing) quick (against Kingsville) and the intensity stayed at a good
level,” Martinez
said. “We are starting to come together as a team. We have had
about 7 injuries and it’s my main concern. We want to stay away
from injuries.”
In other action, the Lady Panthers (3-0-0)
took the girls
Valley
View tournament title on Friday evening by defeating Mercedes
1-0.
On its way to the title, Weslaco High
knocked out Valley View 1-0 and Progreso 3-0.
Cynthia Calzada was named one of the three
Golden Boot awards of the tourney.
Weslaco High head coach David Cordero could
not be reached for comment.
