Lady Wildcats are up for tough test

Weslaco East is unable to pick up a win in first day of tournament

BROWNSVILLE - In day one action at the Brownsville tournament, Weslaco East played strong and tough but it just wasn't enough.

The Lady Wildcats fell in early action to Brownsville Rivera 3-0 on Thursday. In afternoon action, Weslaco East fell in two shootouts to PSJA High and Edinburg North.

"We had a good number of shots on goal, a good number of shots," said Weslaco East head coach Adriel Martinez. "We're just not putting them in (the net) and we're not finishing strong. We got beat (by Rivera) with corner kicks and we're not putting (the shots) in the box. We're not hitting the open spaces on our passes to get clean shots and they're not getting good foot on the ball. I think overall we played good (with teams from top ten in the valley). We can play with anybody, I think we proved that today (and) it's just a matter of winning."

Weslaco East will take on Lyford at 10 a.m. and Hidalgo at 1:30 p.m. in Friday's pool play action. The Lady Wildcats still have a chance to make the Gold Bracket tournament play on Saturday only down only a few points in their group. Wins tomorrow should help settle them in.
