Calzada knows hard work will pay off

WESLACO - The Lady Panthers (4-0-0) are aiming for a soccer district title.

Weslaco High hasn’t won a district title for over a decade now and Weslaco High head coach David Cordero is hungry for one.

In Tuesday’s match against Progreso, Lady Panthers’ Cynthia Calzada had the team’s only hat-trick of the night and year so far. Nia Campos and Myra Huerta each had a pair of goals in their 10-0 shutout victory over the Lady Redants.

“We could’ve played better, but we (still) came out good,” Calzada said. “Our goalie barely touched the ball and we’ve done a pretty good job with that. I think our defense is helping us win.”

Calzada said that the hard work in practices has paid off and so far, they’ve done well.

“(If) we communicate, and pass the ball, we’ll do fine,” she said. “I think we’ll do fine (in) district (play) if we (continue) to do all these things, (like) stay together as team and play well.”

Calzada knows that with support of the team, communication and if they pass the ball better, they can have a chance at winning a district title.

“We’ve been trying so hard (for a district championship),” she said. “We need to try our best and give it all our best and we (should) be able to (earn) it.”

Coach Cordero knows that she’s a well soccer player on field and very patient with how she plays the game.

“She wants what’s best for the team,” he said. “She’s (a) passer, she’s a great soccer player, she’s not in a hurry to make something happen and she’s smart on her decisions. She helps our team out; she controls the mid-field a lot.”
