WESLACO - Due to the swine flu, the UIL has postponed all events till May 11. Weslaco High and Weslaco East last baseball games will be played as soon as coaches confirm the new date scheduled for those games.
Shortly after school today, Weslaco Superintendent Dr. Richard Rivera cancelled school starting May 1st through the 6th due to the outbreak of the swine flu.
They're a total of three comfirmed cases in the Rio Grande Valley. The first possible case of swine flu in Hidalgo county may have hit a student at Weslaco high school, but so far the student is positive for influenza type A. Health officials should receive results back early next week. If the student results come back negative, school may resume back earlier than expected.
UPDATE 5/1/09 12PM:
All teachers will return back to school Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Students do not go back to school until the school district has confirmed the results of the Weslaco high student. If results do come back negative, school should resume mid-next week.
If you are concerned about when grades are due, high school students are on May 11; middle schools and elementary schools on May 7.
UPDATE 5/3/09 2PM:
On Sunday, Dr. Richard Rivera spoke with Eddie Olivarez from the Health Department, but the student has not been confirmed if he is posivitve for the Swine Flu.
Weslaco Independent School District is looking to reopen on Thursday, but that may change. All staff and students should remain home until a further update.
UPDATE 5/3/09 6PM:
WISD has found three more students that are testing for Swine Flu. One which attends Memorial Elementary. If these cases are confirmed classes may resume May 11. No other information is available or if it's official.
UPDATE 5/4/09 9AM:
As of today, WISD still hasn't received any information from the Health Department.
Schools are to remain closed till May 6 and reopen on May 7. Although, this is subject to change.
UPDATE 5/4/09 7PM:
WISD has confirmed just a while ago that the Weslaco high school student does have HIN1 influenza or Swine Flu. It is the first case in Hidalgo County.
UPDATE 5/5/09 1PM:
After the confirmation of the Weslaco high school student having H1N1, the Hidalgo County Health Department recommended that the district should remain closed for an additional seven days. As of now, the WISD will reopen on May 14.
UPDATE 5/5/09 5PM:
As of today, the recommendation from the Hidalgo County Health
Department, CDC and Texas Education Agency is to re-open schools.
Students will return on Monday, May 11 and all staff will
return on Friday, May 8.
