WESLACO - The Lady Panthers knew tonight's game was a big one, especially for the seniors. Weslaco High season finished (17-12) overall and (7-7) in district play. They Lady Panther's rallied in the bottom of the ninth to score one run to win past the Lady Lobos 5-4. They really showed what they could do out on the diamond. "I'm proud, they fought all the way to the end," said Mario Rodriguez, Weslaco High softball coach.
"I think I did pretty good," said Weslaco High freshmen pitcher Alex Galvan. "I thought we could have done better. We could have for sure made playoffs. I was for sure we had a spot."
"More talking as a team and practicing more," said Galvan about increasing the W's next season.
In the month of March, Weslaco High had a total of four losses, which put them in a hole tonight. Weslaco could have secured their playoff spot tonight with a Hanna loss and a Weslaco win, but no spark from Brownsville. "We we're not communicating as a team," said Galvan. "We would take our problems out on the field. We need to learn to stop doing that."
In the ninth inning, Brittni Smith started the inning with a huge hit, which dropped in right field. Crystal Tello hit a double on her at bat, which brought in Guerra for the winning run. "Well it's heartbreaking for me, I thank the team for this season," said Tello, replying with breaking tears. "I wish the luck, for the rest of the team next season."
"Our focus, I think we took it for granted," said Rodriguez. "I think we took that we we're going to make the playoffs."
After the game, coach Rodriguez talked to Galvan and told her, I need you to recharge your batteries and come hard. "She's too good of a player, to play another position," said Rodriguez.
"If she's got a gift, you got to use it," said Rodriguez about Galvan.
The Lady Panthers season is over, but that doesn't mean next season they can't make the playoffs next year and go on a great journey.
