WESLACO - It may be Elizabeth Hovda's
senior year, but that doesn't mean her golf playing years are
over. She know what she wants, but despite that, she know after
college she will strive and try to become a great professional
golf player.
During last week's regional tournament,
Hovda scored a 77 in round one and 78 in the second, with a
combined total of 155. "She was excellent," said Coach Noe Rico
about Hovda's performance at the regional meet. "You have to play
a perfect round to do so. You need two great rounds to qualify for
the state meet. She played good, but she could've done better.
It's hard to know that she can't make it to the state tournament
her senior year."
"I say in my book she's the best golfer
in the state," said Rico.
"I didn't expect to have a career low," said Hovda about her performance at regionals. "I'm going
through a lot of changes because I've been changing pros."
"The further up we go it's a lot harder," said Hovda. "It's because there's not a lot of girl golfers down here in the valley. At regional's there were so many good individuals."
"Just hours and hours of practice," said Hovda about how she prepares herself for tournaments. "All the tournaments are the same, whether it's the district meet or regionals."
"My strength would be my chipping, it's my best," said Hovda.

If both Hovda and Angela Luna from
Weslaco East both matched up, it would be a great sporting event
for many people to see in the valley with the match up probably
coming down to the last hole. "She's a good golfer, she has a potential," said Hovda. "Between us, I think I have more experience on the course. You can tell she really likes it."
"I shot a 70 at Tierra Santa in Weslaco," said Hovda about her best score she's shot. "I was playing with a pro that day. It's wasn't a real tournament, but it was the best I've had."
"It's tough to answer," said Hovda about her favorite golf course outside the valley. "I like Lake Walden. I think it's the hardest I've played at. I played there during my sophomore year and it ate my lunch."
"My favorite golf course in the valley would have to be McAllen Country Club because of the fast greens and it's just a true looking golf course," said Hovda.
"My favorite golfer in general is Phil Mickelson," said Hovda. "He is the ultimate underdog. I can relate to him a lot."
"I do plan on being a professional golf player," said Hovda. "After college if I have the opportunity, I'm going to take that."
"Oh yea," said Hovda when asked if she is
planning on pursuing golf beyond her high school career. "I plan
on walking on the Texas A&M golf team or transfer to another school, if not, that will just give me more time of going pro."
"I will probably go check out the tour in Brownsville and see how they play out," said Hovda.
"She has a lot of talent," said Rico. "I
hope she continues to play. It's just so difficult to shoot those
numbers. In golf everyone has errors, it's not so easy to have a
perfect round scoring a 59. It just comes down to who has the
least amount of errors."
