WESLACO - At the end of the girl’s class 4A regional meet in San Antonio, TX, Angela Luna scored a 78 in round one and 81 in the second, with a combined total of 159. Luna came in ninth in the state of Texas.
"I'm happy about my performance,
especially that I'm a sophomore," said Luna. "I still have two
years and hopefully I'll make it to state."
"It's way tougher up state, way tough,"
said Luna. "These are the girls that are going to give me
competition later on, like in college."
"I just know there is going to be
competition," said Luna. "I practice everyday, and just be on top
of my game."
"My strength is my long game, like my driver," said Luna.
If both Luna and Elizabeth Hovda from
Weslaco High both matched up, it would be a great sporting event
for many people to see in the valley with the match up probably
coming down to the last hole. "I think we're pretty matched up,"
said Luna. "We both have a good game and our strong points. It
just depends on our game that day."
"My score was a 73," said Luna about her
best score she's shot. "It was at Montecristo and where I was
named district champ."
"It would have to be Byron Nelson in
Dallas, TX," said Luna about her favorite golf course outside of
the valley.
"My favorite golf course is Montecristo,
it's where I shot my lowest score and where I won district," said
Luna.
"My favorite golfer is Tiger Woods," said
Luna. "I think he's a great golfer. Hopefully I can play like him
one day."
"He's pretty amazing," said Luna about
woods. "He can come back and win tournaments. He's an amazing role
model. He's a really good golfer. Hopefully I can be like him."
Luna says she is going to want to play
golf later on, and as part of her career after high school. "Of
course, I plan to do that," said Luna. "It's a big plan for my
life. I hopefully want to make it to the LPGA."
"I do actually, I do want to be one in
the LPGA later on in the future," said Luna, when asked if she is
planning on being a professional golf player. "But yea, hopefully
I will."
"Definitely, I would like to see that,"
said Luna about the LPGA tour that will be that will be played in
Brownsville, TX in a couple of weeks. "I would like to see that,
so that I'm able to match the way they play theirs."
Luna came up short in the regional meet
in San Antonio, TX on Tuesday, but says that next year she
definitely wants to make it to the state meet and win it all. Luna
is confident about her dreams and future with golf being a big
part of her. "She is a competitive golfer, who poses unlimited
potential and good kid," said Coach Woodie Howel.
